14.

L et’s go.” I stood, sparing a regretful thought for the coffee that I’d barely touched. But Cassie caught me by a wrist, preventing me from stalking out.

“Let’s maybe take a minute and explore this,” she said. Her tone was light, but a vertical line appeared between her brows.

“I’m not—”

“I am your dearest friend, Rebecca.” The light tone was gone, replaced by mixture of fear and frustration.

I sat back down.

“Fine. So, what kind of prediction is this?”

Lauren’s eyebrows climbed. “I wasn’t aware there was more than one kind of prediction. I see the future, then it happens. It’s pretty straightforward.”

I shook my head, mouth pulled to one side. “Nah, I’ve read this book before. There’s at least four different kinds of predictions. And that’s just off the top of my head.”

“Maybe you could explain.”

I raised a pinky finger without breaking eye contact. “There’s the predictions that come true because they’re right no matter what. The pointless kind.”

Cassie and I had taken history and literature together for years. She must have understood where I was going because she chimed in. “Like Croesus. He was the King of Lydia and he asked the Delphic Oracle whether he should invade Persia. She told him that if he did, a mighty empire would fall. He assumed that meant his victory was assured, so he went ahead and invaded. He lost and Persia conquered Lydia. They were both mighty empires, so one of them was going to fall either way.”

I nodded, and a ring-finger joined my pinky. “There’s the predictions that come true because they’re so vague they can mean whatever you want after the fact.”

Cassie joined in again. “Like when the Athenians asked the Delphic Oracle how they could defeat an invading army, and the Pythia told him they would be saved by their wooden walls. Their navy ended up defeating the invaders, and they decided after the fact that the navy counted as a wooden wall.”

My middle finger joined the other two. “There’s the kind where the prediction only comes true because you tried to avoid it.”

Cassie again. “Like Oedipus. His parents sent him away as a baby to avoid a prophecy he would kill his father and marry his mother, which only came true because he didn’t recognize who the two of them were when he grew up.”

Finally, I raised my index finger. “Then there’s the kind where the prediction is of a possible future, one of many. Like, you can foresee probabilities, and we can change them by our actions.”

Cassie glanced at me, head tilted and one eyebrow raised. “Minority Report?”

I nodded and she smiled. “Nice one,” she said.

“So, what’s the scam?” I demanded. “My dearest friend lives to a ripe old age but it turns out the murderer is really time? Or, oh, it turns out my dearest friend is a literal deer or something?”

Lauren chose to ignore my sarcastic questions. “There’s a fifth kind you’re forgetting.”

I wasn’t, actually, but I hadn’t wanted to say it out loud. Frustratingly, I was pretty sure she knew that.
